Connectivity for mobile devices - CAN Newsletter September Issue - 866 KB
This article describes how mobile CAN-based systems and machine-on-wheels can be connected to the Internet. If you have not heard buzz words like Internet of Things (IoT), Machine-to-Machine communication (M2M), or Industry 4.0 you might have spent the last few years on Mars or in an information black out. With the emergence of the Internet and lowcost data transmission possibilities, we started to connect a wide range of things (like sensors, machines, etc.)...

To reduce cabling effort, Moba developed a controller that contains an integrated terminal strip on top. OEMs are now able to wire their machines directly to the top of the controller. The time-saving benefit is only one aspect that convinced Ruthmann, manufacturer of truck-mounted working platforms, to use the Modular Control Panel MCP for their Steiger series and models called Cockpit. The integrated cabinet contains the mentioned controllers with a timeefficiently removable plug and clamp combination on top.

Asphalt is used mainly for the construction and maintenance of roads, and as demand for such infrastructure takes off worldwide so demand for the product grows. A blend of aggregates, binder and filler is used in the different layers of a highway pavement, and today is produced and laid using sophisticated equipment. Xi´an, north-west China, home to the famous Terracotta Warriors, was once the country´s imperial capital where, over 2000 years ago, Emperor Qin Shi Huang had a passion for building. He bagan work on the Great Wall, built the warriors to protect him after his death, and constructed the country´s first road network. China´s road building programme is now rather more ambitious, with more than 10000 km of new highway being completed each year.

High-Quality control panel solutions that can be individually adapted to the needs of each machine while requiring only short development times enable OEMs to take a more flexible approach to mobile automation. Automation technologies play a very important role in all machine sectors nowadays. The goal is always the same: optimizing processes, increasing efficiency and combining individual subsystems to create one high-end system.

Innovations in Milling. New developments for the milling machine sector shoul help optimise performance, as well as increase health and safety standards for site personnel. Advances in the milling machine market generally focus on new models being available or developments to drums and cutters. However some rather different developments are taking place that could well deliver long term improvements for health and safety as well as the quality of work carried out, optimising milling operations. Meanwhile German firm MOBA is now offering a system that can help optimise milling quality. The company is introducing its Big Sonic-Ski system, which suits use with road milling machines as well as asphalt pavers.

A new automated levelling tool from MOBA is available that can help improve paving quality. The system is designed to deliver a smooth and even asphalt surface, by ensuring that the height and slope of the screed on the paver is accurately maintained. This is particularly important when the machine is moving in the vertical plane due to uneven ground or sub-base conditions. Achieving smoothness is important to the paving contractor. In many countries, highways authorities will pay more for smoother roads and also penalise contractors that do not meet smothness specifications.
